Inverness Florida is located on the east side of Citrus County. The City of Inverness was incorporated in 1919 as the sister city of Inverness Scotland and occupies 7 square miles next to the Tsala Apopka lake chain.

Inverness is the government seat of Citrus County, making it a hub of local government activity and business.

At the center of all this activity is the downtown square. The most prominent building in Inverness is the 1912 Historic Court House , which now stands front and center as the focus of the rejuvenated downtown.

In 1891 the Florida Orange and Transit Company deeded a one-acre square known as Courthouse Square, to the County to build a courthouse. A wooden Victorian structure was built on the square in 1892 and there it stood until 1911, when the County then decided to build a "new" courthouse during the prosperous times of the phosphate boom.

For over fifty years this courthouse (now known as the historic courthouse) on the square served the needs of Citrus County. However in the 1970s, with the County bursting at the seams a new, larger, modern courthouse was built next door. The “old courthouse” now serves as a historical museum.

The historic downtown area has been renovated and is a great place to spend a few hours visiting the variety of shops and restaurants or just sitting on a bench under a moss draped oak tree.

Inverness is a lively, active community with many annual festivals and events. The Great American Cooter Festival is a popular annual festival in downtown Inverness. The weekend event consists of Cooter Races, and other fun and games for the kids as well as fireworks and great food. Here you can enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings of Inverness on the lake front park with real Cooter Turtles which the event is named for.

The annual 4th of July festival is another highly anticipated event with food, fun, music, and games for the entire family.

Then after sunset there is a spectacular fireworks show over the lake. You can enjoy the show from your boat out on the lake or put down a blanket or chair in the park and just sit back. Either way it is a great ending to what is always a fun filled day.

Inverness is synonymous with water activities as it is located right on the shores of Lake Tsala Apopka. The lake offers excellent bass fishing, water skiing, jet skiing, boating and airboating. There is even an annual speedboat race here.

Inverness also offers many fine golf courses as well as golf course homes and property for sale on the golf courses. Inverness Golf and Country Club is a popular private golf course as well as the public Lakeside Golf Course.

Other attractions in Inverness are the Withlacoochee State Forest with miles and miles of hiking and camping including the Withlacoochee Bicycle Trail. There is also the Citrus County Fair and Citrus County Speedway for pro and amateur race car drivers. As well as a small airport where you can learn to fly, charter a plane, take a glider ride or store your personal aircraft.
