Inverness Florida is located on the east side of Citrus County. The City of Inverness was incorporated in 1919 as the sister city of Inverness Scotland and occupies 7 square miles next to the Tsala Apopka lake chain. Inverness is the government seat of Citrus County, making it a hub of local government activity and business. At the center of all this activity is the downtown square. The most prominent building in Inverness is the 1912 Historic Court House , which now stands front and center as the focus of the rejuvenated downtown. |

In 1891 the Florida Orange and Transit Company deeded a one-acre square known as Courthouse Square, to the County to build a courthouse. A wooden Victorian structure was built on the square in 1892 and there it stood until 1911, when the County then decided to build a "new" courthouse during the prosperous times of the phosphate boom. For over fifty years this courthouse (now known as the historic courthouse) on the square served the needs of Citrus County. However in the 1970s, with the County bursting at the seams a new, larger, modern courthouse was built next door. The “old courthouse” now serves as a historical museum. |
