Floral City

Floral City Florida is located just a few miles south of Inverness in the south east corner of Citrus County. With only about 5,000 residents Floral City is a cozy, little “Old Florida” town.

Like Inverness, Floral City is also flanked by Lake Tsala Apopka as well as the nearby Withlacoochee River. And Floral City is even closer to the main highway, just a few miles from the the Florida Turnpike, I-75, and the new Suncoast Parkway making Orlando and Tampa only 1 hour away and Ocala is less than 45 minutes.

Orange Avenue runs down the center of Floral City and is perhaps one of the most photographed streets in America. The famous street is lined on both sides with ancient oak trees with hanging Spanish moss and whose branches form a thick canopy over the road.

Floral City is rich in heritage, dotted with Victorian Style homes built in the 1890's. During this time period just prior to the turn of the twentieth century, Floral City was a booming area thanks to the rich phosphorus deposits. Tens of thousands of people occupied the area then and many wealthy people built the beautiful homes that still exist today.

One of these homes called the Heritage House is listed on the National Register of Historic places. During Floral City Heritage Days Orange Avenue is closed on a Friday evening, lined with candles, and serenaded by carolers. There is even a Historic Homes Tour when the current owners of these marvelous old homes are open to the public. This is truly a beautiful evening and something to experience.

The area has wonderfully winding roads for weekend country drives. Stage Coach Trail is especially suited for a relaxing afternoon excursion. Take in the magnificent countryside, the sprawling farms and landscape, rolling hills, and natural wildlife.

Another popular gathering in Floral City is the annual Strawberry Festival. But Floral City has long been known for its fruit. Over 75 years ago Doc Ferris planted the first of many citrus groves in Floral City, which we know know as Ferris Groves, “The finest fruit in Florida”. The old fruit stand in Floral City has recently undergone a renovation to celebrate the 75th anniversary. You can stop on for fresh squeezed orange juice as well as a myriad of other citrus products.

There are plenty of outdoor activities in Floral City including fishing, hunting, boating, and air boating on the Withlacoochee River and Tsala Apopka Lakes.

For nature lovers try some wildlife viewing, or maybe bird watching, hiking, horseback riding, biking and skating on the 46 mile long Withlacoochee State Trail, which is a section of the larger Rails to Trails.

The Withlacoochee Bike Trail, as it is sometimes called, runs though quaint downtowns, ranches and into the Withlacoochee State Forest and along the Withlacoochee River.
